FREE WATERMELON ON LADY BIRD LAKE

At Mile marker 10 of the hike and bike trail, between S. 1st and South Congress at the Lounge at the Hyatt Regency between 5:00pm - 8:00pm. Location: Hyatt:, 208 Barton Springs Rd.
The Hyatt Regency Austin, the Texas Watermelon Association, the Texas Pork Association and Go Texan will partner to host the first-ever Slice of Texas watermelon and pork promotion. While en route to the fireworks display, stop at Marker 10 on the Lady Bird Lake trail and enjoy free watermelon slices as well as special menu items on the patio: fresh watermelon martinis, Texas pulled pork sandwiches with an arugula watermelon salad and refreshing watermelon skewers drizzled in local honey and aged balsamic vinegar will all be prepared by Hyatt Regency Austin's SWB and Marker 10 chefs.

We are thrilled to announce the first of the headliners for the 2009 edition of the POP Montreal International Music Festival. Some of them are our heroes, some are iconoclasts, some we have been planning for years, and all are simply excellent and praiseworthy.

ABRAKADOODLE ART CAMP…“Art of Movies”
For aspiring young filmmakers too young for AFF’s Summer Film Camp this year?

Ever wondered what kind of jobs people do to create a great movie, besides our favorite actors we see on screen? This Abrakadoodle Art camp takes students both on-screen and off-screen with their imaginations into the wonderful world of creating movie characters and all the “art work” it takes to bring them to life! Students will try their hands at animation, story-boarding, costume design, set design, even movie poster and DVD cover art, and discover how so many art forms come together through many artists’ creations to bring some of our favorite stories to the big screen for us! Projection Booth Tours will also be held!

THE 4TH OF JULY - What it really means!

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

Remember: freedom is never free!

Patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games.
