The Colorado River Walkers bring you a volksmarch around historic East Austin on Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27. Choose either a 5- or 10K route along city streets and well-maintained park trails past such landmarks as the Texas State Cemetery, Huston-Tillotson University and Lady Bird Lake. The non-competitive event begins at the J. Snell Building, 1050 E. 11th Street in Austin, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. both days; finish by 2 p.m.
This event is sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association (AVA), a member of the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV), and is eligible for IVV Achievement Awards. "B" awards from past events as well as IVV record books will be available for purchase. Cost for this walk is $4 for "B" award and IVV credit, $3 for credit only, or free for no award or credit. Girl Scouts can obtain a special award with payment of the "credit only" fee. All walkers must carry a start card, and may walk the course twice for additional distance credit. Checkpoints with water will be along the route.
To reach the start point, take Interstate 35 to Exit 234C. Turn east on 11th Street for approximately three blocks. The J. Snell Building will be on your left, with parking behind the building. Or take the #2/Rosewood bus. For more information, contact Carol Obianwu at (512) 928-9301 or cobianwu@mail.utexas.edu, or write to Colorado River Walkers, P.O. Box 13051, Austin, TX 78711-3051. DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS VIDEO CONTEST
Car2Can (C2C) Video Contest: College Student Outreach
Hello,
My name is Carl Settles Jr. I am contacting you on behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation's Don't Mess With Texas (DMWT) campaign.
DMWT is sponsoring the Car2Can Video Contest asking Texans to submit their best homemade videos showing how they get trash from the Car to the Can. The winning director's video will be aired this summer during a major primetime television show.
If you would like more info or to commit as participants, please notify me by email at Carl.Settles@mediadiversitycouncil.org. I look forward to hearing from you!
Contest Info:
The entry period for submitting videos is May 1st through June 14th. The top 10 videos will be posted for public voting June 29th through July 10th.
The contest is open to all Texans, 18 and over by (June 14th)
Submitted videos must be shorter than 2 minutes in length
If the commercial contains music, video, or images, they must be original and created by the director themselves (no TV clips or music from albums).
Videos must feature a positive reference of trash going from a car to a trashcan. Car2Can ideas don't have to be realistic or practical, but should be interesting, creative and inspire others to think "That's cool, I never would have thought of that!"
Prize Info:
Grand Prize: Winning video will premier as a Don't Mess with Texas television commercial during a major primetime show on network TV (in winner's home media market). Commercial also may be used as a statewide PSA (if appropriate). Winner will also get a $500 Wal-Mart gift card.
Second Place: Gibson Epiphone guitar, branded by Sweet Leaf Tea.
Third Place: Sweet Leaf Tea Prize pack, consisting of free tea and promotional items such as T-shirts.
Rationale:
For 23 years the DMWT campaign has been known for its great commercials.
Despite the success, litter is still a huge problem in Texas. 827 million pieces of trash end up on Texas roadways every year. Since the majority of this litter comes from cars, DMWT is reminding the public that trash should go from their car to the trash can, not the side of the road.
We appreciate your help!
Sincerely,
Carl Settles
